If you’ve been following my channel for awhile, then you’ve probably seen my, how to color your hair to caramel ombre brown at home video. In which case, you know my secret. Holy cow, I have a lot of grays!
Consequently, I have to color my hair every 2~4 weeks, or my grays become glaringly noticeable. But I don’t color ALL of it, just my problem areas, and you shouldn’t either if you’re in my shoe Reason being, over coloring can lead to dry, brittle hair and excessive overlapping of color. Ever seen a lady with muddy black ends and light brown roots? That effect is caused by overlapping of color, and it’s a common mistake in DIY home coloring jobs. But I’m going to show you how to prevent these problems.
In this hair tutorial video, I’m going to show you how to touch-up your hair color to create a warm caramel brown shade using Clairol’s Root Touch-Up. And how to neutralize the brassy tones and refresh a fading ombre color with Natural Instincts .
These are drugstore priced hair dyes found in the US.
Scroll down to the bottom to watch the, step-by-step, video to see what I used with the full instructions.
Step 1: Make sure to do an allergy test 48 hours before doing any type of chemical process on yourself, including hair coloring.
There is absolutely no need for you to color all of your beautiful hair willy-nilly because you have 20 strands of gray hair at your sides. Instead, try out this easy to use hair dye called the Root Touch-Up from Clairol to color just those few strands of pesky grays that’s ruining your mane of glory. It even comes with a teeny-tiny application brush for dying small areas or a few strands of hair.
To clarify, this product shouldn’t replace your normal hair dye, instead, it should be used in conjunction, as an in-between hair color.
Other ways to use the Root Touch-Up
- To touch-up your hair color, in-between hair coloring appointments at the salon.
- To quickly touch-up your roots in-between a real root touch-up jobs at home – what I’m doing in the video.
- To recolor grays that didn’t get colored during a normal coloring process – so annoying when it happens, right?
- To correct a patchy coloring job that you or your colorist did – we all make mistakes!
- To color a patch of gray.
And it’ll last 3 weeks.
Root Touch-Up by Nice ‘n Easy will work in just 10 minutes for most people. But since I have resistant gray hair (Asian hair being the most resistant), I waited a little longer to ensure a good gray coverage. And yes, it had 100% grey coverage, so no worries there, but be sure to check your hair before washing it out. If you’re really anxious about your grays though, I recommend that you going with a Neutral shade (will have an “N” on the box).
I want to make this clear; anyone can use this product. It’s not just for gray hair! I’m rambling on and on about gray coverage because it’s a personal struggle, and because I know how hard it is to find a naturally looking hair color that also has a great grey coverage.
With more than 20 colors to choose from, you’ll find an exact match to your hair color, even if you get your hair colored professionally at the salon. And if you’re ever unsure about what to use, go ahead and call 1-800 Clairol to find out.

After quickly coloring my roots, I used the Natural Instincts as a toner to neutralize the brassiness on my ends, and to refresh my fading caramel brown ombre.
One thing you guys might have taken note of, this time, I didn’t cover the ends of my ombre with the conditioner to protect it from the dark dye before rinsing it out. That’s because I didn’t have to with the Root Touch-Up, since the amount of dye used on my roots were minimal. But if you were doing a full root touch-up with a normal hair dye ( Age Defy is my choice), then I recommend that you cover your ends with some conditioner before rinsing it out.
My favorite thing about using Natural Instincts is how amazingly shiny, healthy and vibrant my hair always looks afterwards.
And the conditioner that comes in the box…. I wish they sold it separately. Serious. They must know this because the tube is HUGE. It lasted me 2 weeks!
Natural Instincts – a Demi hair color from Clairol can be used to:
Tone your hair
As a gloss – to add shine
To blend away your gray hair
Temporarily change your color ( washes out in 28 shampoos)
Recommended time is 10 to 15 min (15 for resistant grays). I left it in for the full 10 minutes, top to bottom, since I’m using a light shade to add just a hint of color.
More than 40 shades!
I love that it’s made without any ammonia, so it’s gentle on the hair.
Contains Aloe, Vitamin E & Coconut Oil
